Lady Saw's Last VP Album

BY TEINO EVANS, Staff Reporter

Lady Saw - FILE

THE FIRST LADY of dancehall, Lady Saw has announced that her next album will be the last with VP Records, the label that she has been signed to for nearly 10 years. The album will be her seventh with the record company.

"This is my last album with VP, this one that we are about to start, I hope. I wanted to be released for a long time, but a lot of people in the VP office abroad, I'm close to them, they are like family and that is my problem. It kinda hard, even sometimes you hurting or you not comfortable with certain things that is happening, you work with it," Saw said.

James Goring, Senior Products Manager at VP Records supports the notion that Lady Saw was like a member of the VP family.

"To my recollection, she (Lady Saw) was one of the first, if not the first artiste to be signed to VP. We have released five albums and one best seller with her, but my whole tenure at VP, I've been working with her and seen her grow, we grew closer than just business. If she leaves or stays is not up to me, that is more of the artiste and A&R's decision," Goring said.

As far as a release date for Saw's next album, Goring says. "It's too early for projections on the album, but I know she is working on songs already."

Some of Saw's albums include 99 Ways, Give Me The Reason, Lover Girl, Passion, Raw: The Best of Lady Saw, and Strip Tease.

Even though Saw has not finalised her next move, she has plans for a little rest and relaxation when her deal is through.

"I was about to take a break this year, mi nuh get rest. Sometimes mi brain jus a run an mi have mi whole family fi support, suh mi always thinking what next, and sometimes mi can't get no sleep," Saw said.

However, she managed to get out recently and had the time of her life.

"I went to the jazz and blues festival, me and Ce'Cile and my boyfriend went and enjoyed ourselves and then we went to the beach, just lay down and was just chilling and I went to Asylum (recently), get tipsy, enjoy mi self an guh home," Saw said.

WORK AS USUAL

However, for now, Saw is jsut concentrating on work as usual. Since returning to Jamaica, Lady Saw says she has been busy voicing on rhythms, but she is trying not to do too much.

"I had plans to write some songs and organise some things, but since returning home, mi tek out about seven rhythms fi write some songs for, but mi have so much rhythms that mi haffi put down some, because some people didn't label it with names and contact. I don't go on every rhythm either, cause one song will kill the other an den some nah guh nowhere. Wi haffi park some of the rhythms," Saw said.

Saw is also preparing to shoot a couple music videos for some of her current singles, to maintain her presence both locally and abroad.

"I'm getting a couple videos together, like Good Men Are Hard To Find, Nuh Drop Di Ting and Walk Out, they will be done as a medley," Saw said.
