EXEMPLIFYING THEIR POSITION as the third- ranked school in TVJ Schools' Challenge Quiz, Manchester High decimated rivals Herbert Morrison Technical in the 13th match of Round One of the competition.

Having a strong record in the yearly academic competitions, the Mandeville-based school showed the nation that they would not be deviating from their legacy.

But based on section one's performance, the fairly inexperienced Herbert Morrison affirmed that they would not be conceding defeat 'without a fight.' At the end of this section, the match was relatively close, with Manchester on nine points and Herbert Morrison on six. However, Manchester was awarded an additional point for a French question that was initially thought to be incorrect, subsequently moving their score to 10.

Section two saw Manchester kicking their performance into 'high gear,' with 26 correct answers, and only one pass throughout their allotted three minutes. This considerable overshadowed Herbert Morrison's performance as they had 13 correct answers and seven passes.

The academic prowess of Manchester team captain, Raphael Ajodhia, shone in their second minute of the speed round, as he gave 13 consecutively correct responses, matching the opposing team's score for the entire round.

IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE

At the end of section two, the score was very disheartening for Herbert Morrison, as Manchester had considerably expanded their lead, having 36 points to their opponents' 19.

It seemed that the spirit and confidence of Herbert Morrison were broken in the buzzer section as Manchester again dominated. In fact, they could not compare to Manchester's impressive performance of 12 correct answers and two incorrect ones in this segment.

Their only response offered in the round was unfortunately incorrect, reducing their final score to 17 points, compared to Manchester's 56.

Although Herbert Morrison experienced an immense loss, their coach, Roushelle Scott, commended the performance of the team. "I think they did well, considering the team we were up against. This is our second time in the competition, and we will be taking on this valuable experience in preparing for next year," said Scott.

There were mixed signals from the Manchester team as both team members and coach were critical of their efforts. "I don't think they have peaked their performance. There were questions that they were taught ... but overall, they played well," stated coach, Howard Thompson.
