Raymond Brown is shot put champ


ANDREW SMITH - Odain Chisholm of Bridgeport High School on his way to third place at the Boys Class 2 (5 kg.) shot put at the Big Shot Invitational meet at Kingston College, last Saturday. Chisholm's put was 13.24 metres, behind winner Damion Johnson of J.C. (13.70 metres) and Craig Dixon of K.C. (13.62 metres).

BRIDGEPORT HIGH'S RAYMOND Brown continued his good form in the shot put event, heaving the implement 16.77m (12 lb. weight) to win the Shot Put Boys' Open, a Penn's qualifying event at the Gatorade and Fimi-Wireless-sponsored KC Big Shot Invitational meet held at Clovelly Park, Kingston College, last Saturday.

Brown also won at the WATA/JC Development meet with a throw of 15.91m (14 lb weight) which is used for class one athletes at Boys' Champs. The Portmore thrower followed this feat with a shot put gold at the Douglas Forrest Invitational meet two Saturdays ago. Brown was followed by JC's Romone Birch (14.70m) while the bronze went to Joseph Weir, also of Bridgeport, with 13.37m. Only Brown past the Penn's qualifying mark of 16.30m.

Brown also won silver, in the boy's class one discuss event and a bronze in the discus Boys' Open Penn's qualifier. JC's Sharif Small (46.36m) won the 1.75 Kg discuss class one boys' title, Brown took silver with 42.45m and Kingston College's Keiton Wilson grabbed the bronze in 39.72m. Small followed his class one discus triumph with 49.11m in the 1.6 Kg weight, to be the lone Penn's qualifier in the event. The qualifying standard is 48 metres. Silver went to Small's teammate Romone Birch (46.63m) and the bronze to Brown (44.30m).

Another Bridgeport student that was among the medals was class two boys' discus thrower Caniggia Raynor, who copped silver with a throw of 40.69m, beaten by JC's Damion Johnson with 40.80m.

LACKLUSTRE PERFORMANCE

Odain Chisholm, unbeaten for the season, disappointed the Bridgeport coaching staff with a lacklustre performance, placing third in the class two boys' shot put with a distance of 13.24m. Chisholm, who won the identical event at the WATA/JC and the Douglas Forrest Invitational meets, was beaten by Damion Johnson of JC 13.70m and Craig Dixon of KC 13.62m.

Bridgeport's lone female competitor Zana Ramsey, could not stand up to the big girls in the girls shot put open, slumping to seventh place with a heave of 9.51m. Vere Tech's Keneisha Throughsing threw 12.27m for first, while silver and bronze went to Jerene Foster of Alpha, 11.14m, and Kimoya Harriot, Vere Technical, 11.05m, respectively.

Though some male throwers from Calabar and Wolmer's and female throwers from St. Jago were noticeable missing, meet organiser Michael Vassell was pleased with the level of performance at this meet.
