A WOMAN WHO appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court to answer to charges of larceny by trick, was granted bail in the sum of $20,000 with surety. Thirty-six year-old Sandra Mendez, pleaded not guilty before RM Martin Gayle.
It is alleged that the accused along with two other men, forced the complainant to engage in a three-card game and robbed her of $4000. The allegations are that on December 30, the complainant was walking along Half Way Tree Road when the accused beckoned to her.
THREE CARDS
The complainant reluctantly complied and said Mendez showed her three cards and told her to choose a card. She also told police that three men appeared and surrounded her. The complainant refused to participate in the game but said she eventually gave in because she felt pressured.
The court further heard that the men chose a card and told the complainant that she won. They then encouraged her to play another round but she refused. It's alleged that the men then ordered her to hand over the contents of her bag. Out of fear, she complied and gave them $4000. It is reported that the complainant walked away from the scene but was followed by the men. She went into a store and the men waited outside until they eventually left.
The complainant reported the matter to officers patrolling the area and Mendez was later apprehended and charged. When she appeared before RM Gayle, Mendez told the court that the complainant was only upset because she lost her money. Mendez was granted bail and is to return to court on February 23.
