UNIOR DOWIE - Camperdown High School. (From left) Everald Daley, Conrad Taylor, Courtney Litchmore and Machel Rayner (captain).CAMPERDOWN HIGH SCHOOL became the latest qualifiers for the second round in the TVJ School's Challenge Quiz competition when they defeated Spalding High 29-22 on Friday.
Although the match was by no means boring, it was not the most exciting one of the season and had their opponents been stronger, Camperdown would have found themselves in problems during the buzzer section when Spalding came within a point of their Corporate Area opponents.
To this end, Spalding coach Paul Morgan believes nerves may have caused his team a come-from-behind victory.
"I think they got jittery especially when they got very close to Camperdown. But, they played fairly well," he said.
For Camperdown however, advancing to the second round means they have some work to do on their response in the buzzer section.
"My team was nervous in the buzzer section because we know we're not good in that area. But, we stood up, did what we had to do and we will be working on it in the next round," explained captain Machel Rayner of Camperdown.
At the beginning of the match, both seemed evenly matched and it was not until the winding down of section one that Camperdown was able to establish a clear lead. A point during the break helped their cause as they gained one more to their total for a chemistry question previously ruled incorrect. Consequently, the score going into section two was 13-8 for Camperdown.
In the speed section, both teams gave a creditable showing. Camperdown was able to gain 14 additional points while the Manchester-based Spalding got 12 which meant that the score going into the buzzer section was 27-20 for Camperdown.
In the buzzer section, Camperdown made a mess of what should have been a comfortable position as they lost four points to be at 25-24 at one stage as Spalding grew in confidence.
But, an incorrect answer on the part of Spalding dashed any hopes of a victory for them as they sat silent for the rest of the section. As a result the match ended 29-22.
