'No commitment'

BY ANTHONY FOSTER, Freelance Writer

Jamaica cricket captain Wavell Hinds. - FILE

CAPTAIN WAVELL HINDS has called for wholesale changes to Jamaica's team against Guyana in next weekend's fifth round Carib Beer Series match at Chedwin Park.

"The selectors need to meet and think about the persons who make a good team," Hinds said in a post-match interview yesterday.

Jamaica suffered two of their worst defeats in the last two weeks, losing by 282 runs to Trinidad and Tobago and 10 wickets to Barbados yesterday.

"We need to go to the drawing board and revisit the areas which need to be developed," Hinds said after his team's loss to Barbados, Jamaica's worst defeat against the Bajans in more than two decades.

CATCH-UP CRICKET

On Friday's opening day against Barbados, Jamaica, sent to bat, fell for a disappointing 129 within two sessions.

"I think we batted poorly in the first innings and were looking to play catch-up cricket for the last three days," said Hinds, who is touted as Shivnaraine Chanderpaul's possible successor.

"You can't get bowled out for under 130 in two sessions and expect to win the game," said Hinds, who made 82 in Jamaica's second innings of 319.

Hinds further pushed for players to be dropped.

"We are looking to get that (players' attitude) straightened with the technical staff as we report to the powers that be back home," he stated.

"The technical staff will just have to revisit and see what kind of game plan we have and the kind of attitude and culture that surrounds the team."

In Jamaica's first innings, Xavier Marshall and Shawn Findlay were dismissed playing shots off the first two balls of the match.

"When we batted, there was no commitment at all," the Jamaica captain added.

SATISFYING EGOS

"Nobody tried to occupy the crease. Everybody wanted to satisfy their own ego in playing all the extravagant shots. Yes, they got two shots off but at the end of the day the team suffered very badly," Hinds explained.

However, the Jamaica captain remains optimistic of making it to the semi-finals as they have already failed to regain their league title.

"All is not lost," he said. "We have some pretty talented youngsters, some guys who want to play for the team and certainly would want to get in and make an impression.

"What we displayed here was very, very much dismal and I am very disappointed with the team," he continued.

Carlton Baugh, 75, and Tamar Lambert, 54, along with Hinds, were the only players with half centuries.
