HELP HAS STARTED coming for Hubert Bartley, a 16-year-old boy whose eyes were shot out on October 28 last year.
Bartley lost his eyes after he was mistakenly shot and injured when he went to visit friends off Old Harbour Road in St. Catherine.
In addition to losing his eyes, Bartley was also shot in the chin, the bullet shattering his teeth before exiting his mouth. He was also grazed on other sections of his body. His story first appeared in THE STAR on November 3 and a subsequent story was published on December 16.
Since then, several persons have offered help for the 16-year-old youth whose medical expenses at the time totalled $181,000. In addition, his mother Marcia Scott was forced to find $4,000 per week to transport Hubert to and from the Kingston Public Hospital.
When contacted last week, Hubert's mother Marcia Scott explained that so far she had received $21,800 towards Hubert's medical expenses. Although still some way off of what is needed she was thrilled.
"I'm really grateful and I appreciate the help so far. It's mostly from abroad but I'm still happy," she said.
WELCOMED VISIT
She said shortly after the story was published, she received help from persons abroad. Miss Scott said one of the donors even visited Hubert.
She told THE STAR that since the story, she has opened an account for him at the City of Kingston (COK) Credit Union, Portmore branch. She said she plans to have him enrolled in a school for the blind as soon as he has recovered fully from his injuries.
Meanwhile, she is asking persons interested in making donations, to do so at account number 4577442 at the COK branch.
