THE MOBILITY OF the Kingston Western police was enhanced following the acquisition of a Suzuki APV motor vehicle on Thursday December 22. The vehicle was handed over by Minister of Finance & Planning and Member of Parliament for the South St. Andrew constituency Dr. the Hon. Omar Davies during a brief ceremony at the Commissioner's Office.
The vehicle was acquired with the collaboration of Group Managing Director of NCB Mr. Patrick Hylton and Mrs. Dianne Stewart, Managing Director of Stewart's Auto Sales.
Among those in attendance were; Commander of the Kingston Western Police, Deputy Superintendent Delroy Hewitt, Managing Director of Stewarts Auto Sales, Mrs. Dianne Stewart, group Managing Director of National Commercial Bank (NCB) Mr. Patrick Hylton and Deputy Commissioner of police Jevene Bent.
PURSUE COMMUNITY POLICING
Commissioner Thomas in accepting the vehicle on behalf of the Jamaica Constabulary Force said that if we are going to succeed as an organisation to bring crime to a tolerable level, community policing is one tenet that will have to be vigorously pursued. The top cop said that the success of the organisation will also be dependent on partnerships by Corporate Jamaica such as the one being witnessed today.
He lauded the National Commercial Bank (NCB) for its unwavering support of the JCF over many years. Commissioner Thomas said that has contributed over $50 million to the Grants Pen community where a multi-purpose facility has been built and over $20 million toward a convalesence home in St. Elizabeth.
He thanked Mrs. Dianne Stewart for her invaluable contribution to the PERF initiative in Grants Pen, St. Andrew and for her part in the acquisition of the vehicle.
Dr. Omar Davis during his presentation commended DSP Delroy Hewitt for the excellent job he is doing in the Western Kingston Division. He said that as long as the present level of crime continues in his constituency it will be difficult for him to do the things he is supposed to do as Member of Parliament such as improving education, sanitation and provide constituents with the things they deserve as human beings.
Mr Hylton told the gathering that there are indications that Jamaica is poised to take off economically in the near future. He said crime and violence are the major constraining factors hampering Jamaica's prospects. He said it is not so much the direct impact of crime that sometimes deterred potential investors but the perception of crime. He said he is happy that NCB has participated in the venture.
Mrs Dianne Stewart in her presentation articulated a wish that what has started in Grants Pen will continue in at least eight other inner city communities. She also hoped that she will be given the opportunity to again partner with NCB in similar ventures.
Deputy Superintendent Hewitt in a brief statement said that he is extremely grateful for the vehicle which will be used to alleviate much of the transportation challenges in the division.
