DESPITE A VALIANT effort from St. Thomas Technical High School in the final match of the preliminary round of TVJ's Schools' Challenge Quiz, St. Hugh's High dominated the encounter, sending the Corporate Area all-girl's school to round one.
St. Thomas won the coin toss and chose to send St. Hugh's High to answer the first question. In the first round, both teams performed commendably, with St. Thomas only missing a few questions, including their inability to identify the Mayor of Portmore, George Lee, in a 'visual aid' question.
At the end of round one, the match was relatively close, with St. Hugh's High at 10 points, leading St. Thomas High who had six points.
SPEED ROUND
The experience of St. Hugh's High shone in the 'speed round', as they answered more questions than their opponents, opting to pass three times throughout.
St. Thomas High however, appeared doubtful about many of the questions put to them, passing a total of 12 times. At the end of round two, the score saw St. Hugh's High increasing their lead considerably, doubling their opponent's score of 15 points, with their 31 points.
The intense buzzer round saw a similar trend, with St. Hugh's dominating the third round, answering 10 questions correctly and two incorrectly, adding a whopping 16 points to their considerable lead.
However, despite the entire St. Thomas team hailing from third and fourth forms, the team displayed a commendable knowledge base, answering four questions correctly and one incorrectly in the final round.
At the match's closure, St. Hugh's High School emerged the victor, with 47 points, to St. Thomas High School's 27 points.
"Our team is made up of fourth and third-formers, so we are a team in development and we didn't do too badly ... We got 13 last year, and 27 this year, so we must get 54 next year," jested St. Thomas Technical High's coach, Raymond Scott.
Although St. Hugh's had a strong victory in that match, team captain Sherie Rowe was critical of their performance, a sentiment that was reflected by her team members.
"We could have done better as we aimed to score 65, but we'll come ready for the next match ... the next team better be ready for us," stated a confident Rowe.
The coach for St. Hugh's, Kevin Jones, was also critical of the team's performance, saying the girls had thrown away too many easy questions, but added that they had done well and should be commended.
