A MAN WHO was serving a sentence in a lock-up was given another sentence for simple larceny after he was found to have stolen US$36 ($2,304) while in custody.
Damion Sullivan, one of the accused men, pleaded guilty to simple larceny but claimed he saw the money lying on the floor and took it up and so was not really guilty of stealing the money.
However, the police say otherwise. Allegations are that on Sunday December 25 at 8 a.m., a police officer on duty at the lock-up removed a pan with money from a locker and started to count the cash. Another officer who was assisting the first officer then went to check off the prisoners in order to give account for them.
While the second officer was checking the prisoners, the first officer joined him and both continued to check off the prisoners. However, when the officers returned to the front desk they saw that the pan was still on the desk and one officer noticed that no US dollars were in it.
Based on information received by the officers they went to cell number one where a prisoner with dreadlocks gave his name as Damion Sullivan and confessed to taking the money. The officers then went to cell six where another inmate Courtney Harvey gave them US$36.
Both inmates were arrested and charged with simple larceny while Harvey was charged with receiving stolen property.
When both appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court, based on the allegations, a no order was made in the charges against Harvey while Sullivan was found guilty and sentenced to 30 days imprisonment at hard labour.
