It is all about budgeting

IT IS THE first column for the Y2K6 and P said we must try and sober everyone up from the get-go on the ground rules of how to seek and find enrichment.

It is partially about the 'Nannies' and the 'Comrade Leader' - how to earn them, how to keep them and most importantly how to grow them.

On a personal level, it is all about budgeting. Learn and live by that Nancy Regan thing - 'Just say No'. Buy what you can afford, spend only on what you need, bun the beggars, and, invest, invest, invest. (No, spending $3,000 on lotto tickets does not count as an investment. Buy one ticket for $30, believe us, it gives you as much of a chance as any other number of tickets, sorry Elsa of Ketch de Rake, we are brethren and sistren still, right?.

Watch the coppers and the dollars will take care of themselves. Don't spend on unnecessary things like traffic tickets, bribing cops, or new phones because a new version is out and don't, please don't, change your car because a new shape is out and yours now looks 'old'!!

On the national level though we need to have a serious chat with the leader hopeful, the prosperity man, OD. Pretty much the same rules apply to him balancing the national budget. While he is inclined to lean very heavily on the 'just say no' ideal, if he were to open his mind to plugging a few more holes and broadening his collection net, we would all be better off.

So for example, reports yesterday about possible awards to families in Flankers of millions of dollars because of police errors leave us all wondering 'what if'. Yes, what if we could significantly reduce payments from the public coffers for killings committed by employees of the state - policemen; wouldn't this be moving the budget in the correct direction? And what if more of the traffic ticket offences generated more money which is channelled into the Government coffers as opposed to elsewhere? And what if everyone who worked, paid taxes?

But please remember that while we started so heartily to talk about the acquisition of wealth, at the end of the day, it really is not all about money. Endeavour this year to build lasting friendships with the people who matter. Hug your mother and father - they or you won't always, be around to hug or be hugged. And finally be a worthwhile role model for even one person - just one thought and a simple action can do wonders to someone's life.

Having a kicking '06.
