Grenadian Roberts praised after brace for Wigan

london, cmc

WIGAN ATHLETIC'S GRENADIAN international Jason Roberts has been praised following his brace which spurred the North West England club to a scintillating 4-3 win over Manchester City on Boxing Day.

The 27-year old striker scored twice in the first half as Wigan rushed to a 3-1 lead after trailing 1-0 after three minutes. Wigan added another to lead 4-1 but conceded two goals late before holding on to win. Graham Kavanagh said Roberts' performance was key to the club continuing their fairy-tale run in the English Premiership.

"We have got back to what we are good at, getting into people's faces. We compete all over the park and we get the ball into areas where Henri Camara and Jason Roberts can cause damage," the 32-year old midfielder said. "The two lads got their goals very well and Lee McCulloch got a great header so we're all very pleased."

It was the second time in a week Roberts had registered a brace after his two-goal effort led Wigan to a 2-0 win over Bolton in the Carling cup last Wednesday. Both his goals on Monday featured clinical finishing, especially the second which saw Roberts shaking off tough defending to slot home on the stroke of half time. "We got the breaks at the right time and we got the goals. We got a goal before half time which gave them a lot of confidence," Kavanagh said.

"We have started a run of four games but to start it off with a win is fantastic."
