Man on fraud charge to spend New Year's in prison

BY TASHIEKA MAIR, STAR Writer

WESTERN BUREAU

A MAN WHO allegedly defrauded three persons of $120,000 to invest in a purported bun exporting business, was slapped with a fourth count of fraudulent conversion, when he appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Paul Pinnock, 27, has been languishing in custody pending the arrival of money from a Miami bank account, so he can reimburse the three complainants. The money is yet to arrive.

The allegations in relation to the new charge are that in October, Pinnock told the complainant that he could arrange a job for her in England. It is said that he told her that she would have to hand over her passport, birth certificate and $6,300, which is the entry fee for a visa.

Further allegations are that the woman met with him at a fast-food restaurant and Pinnock was handed the relevant documents and the money.

However, the complainant did not hear from him and her efforts to contact him were futile. She later learnt that he was in custody when she made a report to the police.

"I never took a dime from this girl and she knows this," Pinnock cried, saying that he was only guilty of taking the complainant's passport.

The accused man's police records show that he has at least four previous convictions for similar offences. He was remanded in custody until January 5.
