SENIOR SUPERINTENDENT RENETO Adams and the two other policemen charged in connection with the Kraal murders in 2003, were acquitted last week after a seven-week trial.
No matter what we want to say about the outcome, this trial is guaranteed to be remembered for years to come because of the discussions which it generated.
However, regardless of what was said during the seven-week case, it is now behind us. But, there are various interest groups dissatisfied with the outcome. And, they have certainly made their disappointment known within the context of the evidence that was brought before the courts.
Nevertheless, we should all remember that this matter is now behind us. For those of us who agree with the verdict, to us justice has been served.
But, for those of us who disagree, then it is time to reflect and hope that another incident involving the police will not end in this fashion. Indeed, it would certainly cause the public to lose faith in the justice system if more of these trials end with a not guilty verdict. But, then and again, it is the prosecution who must prove guilt and if there is no evidence to convict then the jury must return a not guilty verdict.
But, whatever the future holds for either side, the Kraal trial will forever be remembered in this country's history.
