NEWLY ELECTED PRESIDENT of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board, Deryck Murray, has called for more training for umpires at local, regional and international levels.
The former West Indies Test wicketkeeper was delivering the feature address on Tuesday night, at 25th annual presentation function of the South Zonal Council of the TTCB, in Penal.
Murray told the distinguished gathering that when mistakes in umpiring were made, it was not necessarily cause for more technology, but for enhanced training for those officiating.
Murray, who played 62 Tests between 1963 and 1980, also said that international umpires who were found not up to standard, should be replaced.
"If those so called elite umpires are not up to standard, they should be dropped out and new people introduced," Murray said. Murray said that there is also an urgent need to restructure the local board.
"We are in the 21st century and the yardstick by which T&T cricket is measured is by what position West Indies cricket holds in the world ranking," Murray explained. Under-19 left-arm unorthodox spinner Dane Teelucksingh was named Youth Cricketer of the Year while Ian Ragoonanan captured the Cricketer of the Year title.
