THE EDITOR, Madam:
I am writing this letter pertaining to a silence that needs to be broken. While many people look at men (some men) as not being responsible fathers, no attention or maybe little is paid to the mother. But do many Jamaicans know that there are a lot of women who have children, but are not mothers?
Mothers take responsibility likewise the father. There is a silence many Jamaican need to know, and that is, there are many men out there that did their best for their children, while the women don't want to take on responsibility. I have seen cases where children need a simple thing as candy and the woman said you cannot get it unless your father buys it. These women rest the whole responsibility on the father's shoulders.
These women forgot they have the same responsibilities as the fathers, or maybe they forgot that the child belongs to them.
There is a case where the child lived with the father for five years. This child lived with the father from he was one and the mother never even looked back. Sometimes the father actually reminded the mother she has a child. The father of the child got married and the mother of the child said the wife must take her responsibilities or let her leave, because the child was there first.
This woman can afford to dress and sport etc., but she cannot do anything for her child. This woman puts all her friends first, but she doesn't remember she has a child.
There are so many men out there right now that take on 100 per cent responsibility for their children, while these women don't do anything, and no one pays attention to this. This silence needs to be broken.
I am, etc,
