Pinchers back in the spotlight

BY TEINO EVANS, Staff Reporter

Pinchers - FILE

PINCHERS WAS ONE of the hottest dancehall singers back in the 1980s to early 90s and was known for combining smooth vocals with pulsating rhythms. But then he just disappeared from the musical landscape.

Well the singer who intrigued followers of both lovers rock and dancehall is now back to the fore with his typical sound, but this time it is on a different type of rhythm.

Pinchers' latest single, Desperate Scenario on the Eighty Five rhythm produced by Dave Kelly on the Mad House label, has been creating some stir in dancehall circles.

But however unusual it may seem for an old school artiste to be recording on a 'hip', new rhythm, Pinchers said it was just the will of the Almighty.

"Mi jus come back from a five-week tour a Europe, an jus as mi drop in a jus di most high set it up, cause Bounty Killer an Cham dem a mi people from long time. Suh it happen seh dem did sen mi di track via Internet fi mi listen an mi come down come voice pon it," Pinchers explained.

His song, is one of seven songs recorded so far on Dave Kelly's rhythm, which also features the hit single, Ghetto Story from Baby Cham. Other artistes on the rhythm include Spice, Dante formerly Black Er and Assassin.

Pinchers is one of the most esteemed singers in reggae music over the past 15 years. He began his career singing with local sound systems, before coming to the attention of one of the top producers, the legendary King Jammy.

His first mega-hit was 1987's Agony, which led to the dancehall album, Got To Be Me. He also did the 1992 combination hit single, Bandelero, with Bounty Killer.
