Y'know, since a couple young tourists have been kilt or disappeared in the Caribbean (Jamaica and Bermuda, specifically) it has occurred to Jackass that it is just too easy for foreigners, especially from 'up North', to enter Caribbean countries and have a good time.
All they need is a driver's license.
Now, this sets a bad precedent for someone, especially a young someone, to enter a foreign country. Because when they can use only a piece of plastic which authorises them to drive a car in their country to enter another, it sets the stage for a cavalier, carefree attitude which often leads to grief.
Of course, it also leads to many a smile on the faces of many a young (and not so young) Jamaican male.
So the person who is coming to Jamaica using a driver's license has no sense of undertaking a serious endeavour, one which requires a sense of responsibility. He/she is simply on another jaunt, as simple as driving to the store to get a carton of milk.
On the other hand, the Jamaican who is heading off to 'farin' appreciates the seriousness of the undertaking from day one, from standing outside the embassy in the early morning (for those who have to go through that barbarous treatment), to paying for the visa application (non-refundable), to scampering around for the necessary documents, then turning up to be grilled by an immigration officer. After going through all that and finally making it to 'farin', the traveller from the Caribbean appreciates that he or she is on a significant undertaking. He appreciates the opportunities he is getting and don't do anything damn stupid like going off with strange people at 2 a.m. for 'a drive'.
The world is not level in the sense that some foreigners can come to Jamaica on a piece of plastic, while the yardies need bank account statement and all sorts of paper paper in order to have a chance at getting to 'fly out'. But things have a way of balancing out, don't they?
So Jackass has the solution to all these rumpusses about missing girls, calling in the police, fathers protesting 'my little girl would not do anything like that!' and smear campaigns against entire islands by countries that do not make it seem significant for their citizens that going to 'the islands' is not like taking a jaunt to the kerb for the newspaper.
Just make the process of going to Jamaica and other places that young white girls go to to get a shot of Black power (wink, wink) a little bit harder. Then they will really appreciate that they are going somewhere, that it is really international travel. Then they may just take better care and stop causing us so much trouble.
