SEVERAL DISGRUNTLED RESIDENTS of Church Pen, Old Harbour, St. Catherine blocked a section of the main road leading to Old Habour yesterday, bringing traffic to a standstill for several hours.
The residents, who were protesting against the bad condition of the road leading into the community, complained about a dust nuisance on the road which they said have been made worse from the recent heavy rains.
They say the authorities have put marl on the road and the dust is causing bronchial sickness. The fed up residents say their complaints to the National Works Agency have fallen on deaf ears.
Wood, metal and stones were used to block the road. One resident complained that she could not speak properly as a result of the dust. Adassa Brown, a resident, showed the news team several layer of dust on her car, clothing and furniture.
Several shops and bars along the road claimed that they have to go through a daily routine of washing their goods. A practiCe which they claim to find grossly unfair. "We have to be using money from our pockets to get water to keep throwing on the road to minimise the dust. Right now I can hardly speak because the doctor tells me that the dust nuisance has affected my lungs," remarked Brown.
The blockages caused a pile-up on the road for hours, however the police quickly got things under control.
An attempt to get a comment from Member of Parliament, Clifford Everald Warmington proved futile, as his secretary claimed that he was out of office.
