A MAN WHO stole a police bicycle from a police station was sentenced to three months imprisonment at hard labour when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
Carter Wong, the accused man who is from a Kingston address at first, pleaded not guilty to larceny but changed his plea after presiding Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey cautioned him to think before offering his plea.
"Your Honour I see the bicycle lying careless and I saw the police and call dem to come secure the bicycle," Wong first told the court.
"Stop, think and start again. The bicycle mark Police. Guilty or not guilty for stealing the police bicycle?" RM Pusey asked the accused.
Wong then pleaded guilty and was sentenced.
Allegations against Wong are that on Sunday, November 6, at 9:45 a.m., the accused entered the Cross Roads Police Station through an unused back gate and stole a patrol bicycle with all the police markings.
The accused then attempted to sell the stolen bicycle at Peter's Lane which is close to the station. Residents who know the accused as a drug addict retrieved the bicycle and beat the accused. Police officers on patrol saw the accused being beaten and calling for their help. When the officers went over to help and conducted further investigations into the beatings, the accused claimed the bicycle was a gift from his uncle. However, he could not provide any family member to support this claim. The residents said they saw the accused leave through the station's back gate with the bicycle. Wong was arrested and charged.
