THE LEAD STORY in Tuesday's STAR spoke about a man who had been dead for about two days before the family removed the body from the house.
According to the story, residents in the community had expressed concern about the surviving family members and called on authorities to provide counselling for them.
The deceased had reportedly been dead since Friday, and although his brother indicated to his mother that his brother may be possibly dead, the mother denied this claiming he must be resting. The body was not removed until Sunday.
What is striking about the story is that although the police were summoned to the place to remove the body, no follow-up was done in the sense of alerting another agency or body to provide counselling or support for the family.
The residents were eager to help but were not equipped to deal with the situation. They did not even know where to turn to get the necessary counselling for the relatives.
While as Jamaicans we support each other, a more formal support system is needed to help Jamaicans who have experienced trauma, including death. As a society, it is important that we support each other. By doing so we can help to mend some of the broken homes and lives in the society and help to build Jamaica into the beautiful place it can be.
