P SAYS TO me that he really can't understand Mayor Desmond McKenzie and his friends as he commented on the tear-gassing of the lawbreakers who were attempting to march on Jamaica House last Monday to deliver letters to the Prime Minister.
I must agree with P and say neither can I understand the Mayor.
This is the fellow who has been a tough cookie implementing harsh zero tolerance measures when it comes to his portfolio, yet when the shoe is on the other foot he expects special treatment. Why?
NO-NONSENSE STANCE
Remember this is the fellow who supervised the towing away of all those cars parked in the no parking zones in the city - all bar none including police cars. This is the fellow who went and plucked off all the illegal signage defacing many parts of the Corporate Area - from 'real estate for sale' signs to 'mufflers repaired here' signs - they all had to go. This is the dude who said 'Mr Circus you can't walk into Kingston and set up shop you need to get permission!'
And when the Mayor took his tough no-nonsense stance P and I said kudos to the Mayor. Because, while it might have seemed over the top to some people - a large dose of zero tolerance in all areas is what this country needs to restore discipline and common decency to the society.
So you can imagine how disappointed P and I were to see the Mayor leading a crowd to go break the law!
But since he chose to do the wrong deed I said to P they should have gassed him some more because if there are rules and laws governing how one should or should not demonstrate, why should the Mayor and his cronies feel that they are above it?
Look at how many other unruly groups have felt the sting of tear gas - so why should the Mayor and his group of lawbreakers be any different? In fact P and I feel happy to see finally that the law did not seek to discriminate because the lawbreakers were elected Mayors versus young university students or angry inner-city people. Big up to the cops.
However, there is another thing about Monday's fiasco. If you were to watch the report carefully you do know that a number of Academy nominations are definitely in order. Actually at first glance the event could have passed for one of the riot drills.
