Glenmuir qualify for round of 16

Glenmuir's in-form player Walter Williams (left) will be key if Glenmuir are to win a second straight title. - contributed

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS GLENMUIR 'A' continued their rampage through Zone 4 of the 2005 LASCO/RBTT National Schools Chess Championship with back-to-back 4-0 victories over St Jago 'A' and St. Jago 'B' on Friday.

These victories took Glenmuir 'A' to an unassailable 15.5 points and the first team to automatically qualify for the Round of 16 which is scheduled to begin in January 2006.

Glenmuir 'B' are in second place on 9.5 points after 3-1 victories over Charlemont and St. Jago 'A.' With one round to go, St. Jago 'A' on eight points and Charlemont and St. Jago 'B' on seven points each will tussle with Glenmuir 'B' for one remaining round of 16 automatic qualifying spot from Zone 4.

Teams that are not amongst the eight automatic qualifiers for the round of 16 will have to go through a series of gruelling matches to secure one of the other eight round of 16 slots.
