KINGSTON MAYOR, DESMOND McKenzie, says his office is dealing with the issue of garbage collection in downtown, Kingston. But adds that both residents and business must uphold their civic responsibility.
Mayor McKenzie's statement came in a recent interview with THE STAR when the question was posed about downtown, Kingston and its rat problems.
"Business people and residents need to practise proper disposal. We've had discussions with the National Solid Waste Management Authority about the collection of garbage," he said.
Recently, persons have commented about the number of rats seen in downtown, Kingston and the length of time it takes for garbage to be cleared off the city's streets. One shopper in downtown, Kingston told THE STAR that she avoided that part of the city because of how dirty it becomes on weekends. But, Mayor McKenzie said business people were not the only ones responsible for dumping garbage in that area.
"Residents need to uphold their civic responsibility. It's not just business people who are responsible but residents as well. It's a problem we are dealing with though," he said.
He added that the entire downtown, Kingston would soon be redeveloped as plans were being put in place to reclaim back that section of the city.
"The plans are advanced and the Kingston Restoration Company is dealing with that aspect of it. But, we are bent on restoring that area to what it once was," he said.
