IT WAS ABOUT three thousand years ago that the Chinese invented acupuncture and moxibustion. The techniques involve the body's channels and their collateral and are often touted as 'very effective' for treatment.
Acupuncture and moxibustion have since been introduced abroad, and popularised in many countries.
It is a therapy by needling and fuming a certain acu-point with moxa smoke to transport the channel 'qi'. It restores and regulates the functions of the 'zang- fu' organs, 'qi' and blood flow in the body.
HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK?
Diagnosis of the condition is assessed on the basis of the patients' complaints and symptoms. The acupuncturist looks at the the colour of the face, the condition of the tongue, skin, eyes, fingernails and hair. He may ask for a urine or stool sample to check its colour, and listen to the quality of the voice, its volume and force, as well as to the sound of breathing or gurgles in the abdomen.
The acupuncturist may also need to know about the appetite, and body's fluid secretion, and may make enquiries about the family's medical history.
Finally, the acupuncturist examines the pulse, the main method for determining the condition of the body's energy flow.
With the information gleaned from the interview and pulse reading, the doctor determines the specific imbalance and the points that will need acupuncture.
