C&W overseas calling service - VoIP

By Leroy McLean, Contributor

Vol. 10:19

IN A RACE to catch up with the competition, Cable and Wireless (C&W) recently launched its own Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service here in Jamaica. I did an article some time ago talking about a similar service in Cayman by this company. Now Jamaica is reaping the benefit from this major investment.

NetSpeak is C&W's new residential post-paid VoIP over broadband service. NetSpeak is ideal for International calling. Calls travel over the Internet rather than over the traditional fixed line telephone network, so the costs are lower, making them more affordable to you. You have the same experience of dialing and receiving phone calls from your telephone handset. NetSpeak not only offers plans for a fixed monthly fee but also offers significantly lower rates on calls to international destinations.

There are several different packages that you will find very interesting and affordable in today's economy. One thing I really like about C&W's pricing is that it has decided not to quote in US dollars, but instead use the local currency.

Netspeak Basic, unlimited calling to U.S.A., Canada and U.K., $1,575.

Choice of one free U.S., Canada or U.K. number.

Unlimited Calls (Zone A) to Ireland, Netherlands, Singapore, Spain and Sweden.

Free calling features (call waiting, call blocking, caller ID and call return, not sure of the difference between this and redial, call forwarding, three-way. voicemail, english or spanish). You can get an additional telephone number at a cost.

Netspeak 100 minutes to C&W Carib Islands, $879 Anguilla, Antigua, Barbuda, Barbados, Bermuda, BVI, Cayman, Dominica, Grenada, Monsterrat, St Kitts & Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Turk and Caicos.

(To fixed lines only)

Requirements:

High Speed - 128k is acceptable, however, for browsing and making calls, minimum of 512K. You will get terminal adapter from C&W for connection to your regular telephone.

All prices are subject to 20 per cent GCT. You will also need to budget for one-time activation, $2,499. There is also a cost for additional numbers, $249
