GOAL ATTACK MARCELLA Thompson shot an astounding 33 goals from 34 attempts to lead defending champions Westchester to a comfortable 42-30 win over Braeton in the final of the Portmore Sport/Youth Clubs Association-Island Grill/TVJ Intermediate Netball League last Sunday at Bridgeport High School.
"We come out with a win which was expected of my team because we trained hard and and we were the better team on the day," Pauline Turner, coach of Westchester told THE PORTMORE STAR.
Thompson's goal shoot Camille Turner supported her with nine goals from 17 tries, while Karen Smith, 18 from 24 attempts, scored most goals for Braeton.
Westchester led 12-5 in the first quarter and maintained the lead at 22-14 at the halfway point, mainly assisted by inaccurate shooting by the Braeton shooters and costly turnovers as each time they lost possession Thompson made them pay. Westchester did not let up in the third quarter leading 31-19, before closing out the match 42-30.
"I'm disappointed; we could have played better. We were missing Stacey-Ann (Allen) but we didn't play to our game plan," Dorette Reynolds, player/coach of Braeton, said.
Thompson was truly ecstatic at her team's performance. "My team played extremely well and I knew we could win it again. As for my shooting, I feel very good, I shot the ball better today than in the semi-final (against Waterford Missionary)," Thompson expressed.
Meanwhile, Waterford Missionary took third place with a come-from -behind 24-20 win over Bridgeport.
