Sacred Heart Church-Christiana

GEORGE HENRY PHOTO - Sacred Heart Church, Christiana.

NAME OF CHURCH: Sacred Heart Church, Christiana

LOCATION: About 400m from Holmwood Technical High School.

FOUNDED: Early 1930s

FOUNDING PASTOR: Father A. Ford

CURRENT PASTOR: Father Patrick Mbugua

CHURCH HISTORY: In 1932 three Catholic women, Mrs. Creary of Above Rocks, Evelyn Lee of Auchtembeddie and May Lyn of Kingston, hosted Fr. Ford, a Jesuit priest, in their homes to have Sunday Mass. It soon became necessary to build a church; and so Father Ford with the help of his little band of Catholics, together with their families and overseas friends, acquired a piece of land just outside Christiana. On this land a little church, with a small sacristy and a room for the priest to sleep, was constructed. By 1935 the building was completed, dedicated and named St. John Fisher. In 1991 the new Diocese of Mandeville was formed with Bishop Paul Boyle as its first Bishop. Father Patrick Mbugua was appointed pastor in 2001 and immediately the church community approached him about the construction of a new building. A committee was established, headed by Vernon Chong, plans were drawn, a contractor appointed, work started and the church was finally completed for an official opening and dedication on October 22 this year.

OUTREACH PROGRAMME:

The church gives a helping hand to the poor in and around the Christiana area, make hospital visits, visit the homes for the aged and render services in numerous ways from time to time. It also runs a preparatory school and caters for the early education of the children of members and non-members of its congregation.
