TELECOMMUNICATIONS WILL BE easier between Jamaica and the Dominican Republic after a deal signed between Verizon Dominicana and a Barbados telecom company, officials said yesterday.
The US$45 million fibre-optic cable deal will be co-financed by FibraLink Barbados Limited.
The plan calls for linking Kingston, with an already existing network connected to a Verizon Dominicana cable station in the north coast town of Puerto Plata, said Verizon Dominicana manager for international facilities, Manuel Fadul.
AUDIO AND VIDEO TRANSMISSIONS
The network will enable Jamaica to access audio and video transmissions and broadband Internet from more than 20 Caribbean and Latin American countries.
"We are going to increase considerably the capacity to manage telecommunications services between the two countries," he said. The Barbados-based Colu-mbus Communications Inc. has majority ownership of the submarine network, known as the America's Region Caribbean Optical-ring System. The company holds controlling interests in several telecommunications providers in the Caribbean, including FibraLink Barbados.
The cable should be operational in February 2006.
