JACKASS SEY DI worl' no level. Jackass sey de Bulbie case show why nuff time Jamaican no work hard a Jamaica.
Bulbie must have had a damn good view before he died. By now everyone should have seen the picture of the house in Rock River, Clarendon, where he was killed (of course, some say the man is not dead, but hey, they say that about Jim Brown as well). What a spot for a house, looking down the valley at the river, the mist in the background, the sun caressing lush vegetation.
Then there is the matter of gunshots and blood but hey, what a view to a death.
But that was just one of the views that Bulbie could have had from houses that he owned, one of about 20 views, actually. Which he could have gone to enjoy in about 80 different vehicles. Because these were the assets which, if Babylon newspaper is to be believed, Bulbie owned, in his name or someone else's.
Now the world is not level at all. Consider not only what Bulbie owned, but also the amount of money that has been found when reputed gang leaders and drug dealers are arrested, or the assets that are revealed when they are killed (and it is many more than Bulbie here, OK). Then consider the rewards for hard work and struggling to acquire an education.
Jackass always looks at the men and women gathered outside the various construction sites he clip clops past in Kingston, as well as the groups of men who pedal their bicycles from the inner-city communities to go 'uptown' and do back-breaking labour for small pay, and wonders how comes people say certain people do not want to work.
If that was the case, then every uptowner would have to do their own domestic work and it would be much more expensive to put up a house than it now is.
But these people who work very hard are paid very little money for their efforts, and given very little respect as well. Not so for the gangster who makes it in his profession, or the lady of the gangster who makes it in her profession. When they pull up in the Benz or Bimmer or flash the cash, all doors are open and voices are hushed in respect.
Then look at somebody who pursues higher education. Chances are that by the time they acquire the required degrees to really make some money they are older then Bulbie was when he died. As for the women, many have to put off pregnancy so long that they are near grandmother age before they can get to feel the irreplaceable joy of new life stirring in their loins.
But Bulbie, he of maybe triple figure murders and multiple extortion rackets, owns 20 houses in a country where many are glad to get a 'kotch' in a matchbox in Portmore, because "no much better no deh".
Is it any wonder, then, that many Jamaicans go overseas and work much harder than they would ever do at home? For at least although the work is gruelling (Jackass hears), at least you see what you work for.
And you don't have to kill anybody to make it, for those who do not go into the drugs business, that is.
Jackass sey di worl' no level. Jackass sey di Bulbie ting come een like a light bulb fi see how Jamaica really run.
