Why don't they use their power to do good?

ON WEDNESDAY, DOWNTOWN Kingston was the scene of another round of unrest that has been happening in this country since the start of the week.

On Monday and a part of Tuesday, Spanish Town was under siege from residents who protested against the death of Donovan 'Bulbie' Bennett who was shot and killed on Sunday. And, on Wednesday there was unrest in downtown Kingston, as supporters of Donald 'Zekes' Phipps protested before the Supreme Court that he be granted bail.

These two incidents of unrest have no doubt left a bitter taste in the mouths of visitors who may have been monitoring the news in this country. To make matters worse, people were protesting about two individuals who had run-ins with the law.

While reports have surfaced that some of the residents in the case of Spanish Town had been intimidated, these incidents of unrest show the level of controls the dons and their cohorts have over some of Jamaica's citizens.

This level of control no doubt affects us indirectly as as a result of the activities of the protesters, many of us could not go to work or were forced to leave early.

The unfortunate thing in all of this is that the minority who controls the majority uses its power to do evil rather than good. It would be nice if one day these dons and their henchmen used their power to encourage people to do good and be productive. But, that day may never come based on what we saw this week.
