THE BUREAU OF Special Investigations (BSI) has said it is still investigating the death of Calabar student Jeffrey Smellie who was allegedly shot dead by police in August.
Smellie was killed in what the police said was a shoot-out between them and men travelling in a white Toyota Corolla at 1:20 a.m. on August 18. They said the incident took place in the Kingston 11 area when the police pulled up beside the car and ordered the men out. They said the men came from the car and started firing. During the shoot-out, Smellie was allegedly hit.
FAMILY DISPUTED CLAIM
An investigation was launched by the BSI after family members disputed the police account of the story. Smellie's mother Christine Coombs said that the boy was shot after he was returning home with his uncle from the hospital. She said both Smellie and his uncle had accompanied her to the Kingston Public Hospital after the boy's grandmother suffered a stroke. They were returning home when the incident took place.
When contacted yesterday, head of BSI Assistant Commissioner of Police Granville Gause explained that the investigations were still ongoing as the file was incomplete. He said they were still awaiting additional information to complete the file.
