Teens charged with extortion

BY STEPHANIE ELLIOTT, Star Writer

CLARENDON

TWO TEENS RECEIVED sentencing in the Clarendon Circuit Court on Friday, when they appeared to answer to the charges of conspiracy to obtain money and attempting to obtain money by false means.

SUSPENDED SENTENCE

They are Cecil Newell and Jody-Ann Smith, both 19 years old of Palmers Cross, Clarendon. Newell was sentenced to five years at hard labour, while Smith was given a suspended sentence of three years at hard labour.

Allegations against the two are that earlier this year, they conspired and wrote extortion letters to business persons in Palmers Cross demanding them to pay $15,000 per month. The letters had threatened violence if their demands were not adhered to.

Both accused had pleaded guilty to the offence.
