Government must help flood victims

THE RESIDENTS OF Kennedy Grove in Clarendon are finally moving ahead with a lawsuit to sue the Government and developer of the housing scheme for their flooding problems.

The citizens' problems forces one to wonder why the Government allowed this to happen in the first place. If the proper groundwork was done, they would have known that the area was prone to flooding and not a good place to build houses.

The Government is responsible for the problems as it was required to do the necessary checks prior to the development's establishment, yet this was not done.

This sort of negligence on the part of the Government is unacceptable. The Government is here to protect the rights of the citizens, however, if the Kennedy Grove scheme is an example of how this is done, then the government is doing a poor job.

According to the story in yesterday's Gleaner, Minister of Information, Burchell Whiteman was asking residents to be patient while the Infrastructure Committee of Cabinet deliberated on the matter.

However how can the Government ask the people to be patient when this problem has been going on for three years and on each occasion it was brought to the attention of the authorities who have done nothing to correct it?

The Government needs to act urgently and help the residents of Kennedy Grove to rebuild their lives because the pain they are suffering cannot be compensated with only talk. The residents need to see action.
