Motorists slowly make their way in the heavy waters which covered the Mandela Highway in St. Catherine, on Wednesday. Some motorist waited in traffic for up to three hours to get to and from the Corporate Area. - IAN ALLEN
VEHICLES TRAVELLING ALONG the Mandela Highway were still hampered as the west-bound section of the highway remained flooded yesterday.
The Mandela Highway became flooded after days of Heavy rains caused the Rio Cobre and Duhaney River to overflow their banks, resulting in a section of the road being closed to vehicular traffic.
The high volume of water on the road is a problem for motorists entering and leaving the Corporate Area as several have complained that traffic has resulted in delays for up to four hours in some cases.
Since Monday, it has taken motorists at least one hour to travel along the Mandela Highway as sections were reduced to single-lane traffic. Only large vehicles dared to cross the flooded section.
On the causeway, the roads were reopened yesterday after a team which worked through Wednesday night pumped water from the road. "A team worked through yesterday (Wednesday) evening and in the night, to create an area to drain the water so that route is now reopened," explained Portmore Mayor George Lee.
There was, however, still a pile-up of traffic leaving Portmore yesterday as two huge potholes caused traffic to crawl.
