CLARENDON
ALTHOUGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES have been regularised at the Claude McKay High School, James Hill, Clarendon, Acting principal at the 30-year-old institution, Keith Brown, said they are appealing to the Ministry of Education to complete the construction of three additional classrooms to facilitate students there.
Educational activities at the school were curtailed, as students in Grades 7 to 9 were only able to attend school every other week due to the shortage of space.
This proved frustrating to students as they wanted to be able to attend school regularly.
Mr. Brown told THE STAR it took the initiative of principal, Mrs. Glennor Wilson, to have the present situation corrected. He said Wilson sourced funds and purchased two metal containers which were later fixed and are being used as classrooms.
The Vice principal said two years ago, the Ministry of Education saw the need for additional classrooms as the student population increased yearly.
He said construction began on the project but as soon as the building's structure was in place, the relationship between the contractor and the minstry broke down putting a halt to the building.
Mr. Brown said since then, nothing else has been done despite representatives of the ministry making frequent visits to the school and being aware of the shortage of space.
