A 47-YEAR old higgler was shot and injured by unknown assailants along French Street in Spanish Town, St. Catherine, about 6:00 a.m. yesterday and is now a patient in the Spanish Town Hospital in critical condition.
He has been identified as Wayne Nugent of a Young Street address in the old capital.
Reports reaching THE STAR are that Mr. Nugent, who sells along French Street, was just putting out his wares when a man on foot approached him. It is reported that an argument developed and the man brandished a handgun. Nugent ran off and was shot several times in his back. He was rushed to the Spanish Town Hospital where he remains in critical condition.
Meanwhile, 29-year-old Barrington Panton, of Windsor Road, St. Catherine, who was shot and injured when men fire-bombed a five-apartment dwelling house along Windsor Road, still remains in hospital in serious condition.
THE STAR learnt that on October 8, about 9:30 p.m., Panton ran to the assistance of a senior citizen whose house was set on fire by arsonists. While assisting, he was shot in the abdomen.
The house is said to be valued at $700,000 and was not insured.
The Spanish Town Criminal Investigation Branch continues investigation into both incidents.
