Gang-gang Warm as the sun

BYRON MCDANIEL, Star Writer

WALDERSTON, Manchester

ROSLYN SMITH OF Litchfield in Manchester is a happy centenarian because at 100 years old her hobbies are compatible with her sedentary lifestyle.

Born at Davyton in the parish on June 16, 1905, she celebrated her 100th birthday at Litchfield where she came to live since age eight. Three generations of residents grew to love and respect 'Gang-gang' as she is affectionately known.

"She sits on the verandah and greets people every day. Her eye-sight is good and she is able to make out people passing on the road. She also loves to hold conversation especially with children," said her daughter and caretaker Joyce Walters, a relatively youthful 72-year-old. Walters is one of Smith's four offspring alive, of a total of 11 children.

Gang-gang's health is not bad but she is a diabetic and takes medication regularly. Otherwise she is quite happy and enjoys her meals of dumpling and coffee. She does not like chicken though, said her daughter.

Good manners

Asked to what she attributes her long life, Smith said, "Good manners and respect for people and the blessing from God."

Tears rolled down her cheeks as she recalled that her late father Samuel Loftman was a very wealthy man but did not send her to school. Instead he used her like a slave to work on his farm.
