TWO OF THREE persons who were in custody on charges of illegal possession of ammunition and possession of and dealing in ganja, were granted bail when they appeared before Montego Bay Resident Magistrate Winsome Henry, on Wednesday.
The two persons offered bail are 19-year-old labourer Gary McKnight and his pregnant girlfriend, 20-year-old cosmetologist Veniesha Dennis. Remanded is 22-year-old labourer Garnett Williams.
The court was told that on Saturday, September 17, the police, armed with a search warrant, went to Williams' home in Rose Heights, St. James, where they saw all three accused persons. The house was searched and two .357 Magnum calibre cartridges were found along with ganja weighing eight ounces. Williams was subsequently arrested.
House search
McKnight and Dennis were then taken to their home, where a warrant was presented allowing the police to search the house. During the search of a dresser drawer, a black bag was found containing hashish weighing 12 grams and $10,500 was also found in another drawer. They too were arrested.
In his bail application on behalf of McKnight and Dennis, attorney-at-law Clive Mullings said that his clients should be granted bail as the ammunition was not found on their premises. He claimed that they were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. He also appealed to RM Henry to consider the fact that the female was two months pregnant.
McKnight and Dennis were each granted bail in the sum of $50,000 at their own surety and are to report to the Mount Salem Police Station on Thursdays between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
However, Williams was remanded in custody as the evidence against him is said to be much stronger than that against the other two accused persons.
All three are booked to return to court on October 12. Williams did not have any legal representation.
