Alleged thieves beaten by residents

THREE MEN WHO robbed a businessman of cash and jewellery on Saturday night had to be rescued by police officers after a group of residents chased and beat the thieves.

According to police reports, at about 9:30 p.m., the three thieves, armed with guns, went to the home of a businessman in Harmony Vale, Claremont, St. Ann and robbed him of cash and jewellery valued at $65,000.

The businessman managed to escape his attackers who fired several shots at him. The police were informed and residents and the officers commenced a search for the men, however they were not found that night.

At about 7:30 a.m. yesterday, the men were found by a group of residents who immediately started to beat them. Police arrived while the residents were beating the men and rescued them.

The injured men were taken to hospital where they were treated and released into police custody.

However an angry mob of residents went to the police station and demanded that the police release the men to them. When the officers refused, the crowd threw stones at the police officers damaging a service vehicle.

The officers had to use tear gas to disperse the crowd.
