Ascot surprise Spanish Town

ASCOT HIGH CLIPPED Spanish Town High 2-1 at Ferdie Neita Park yesterday to move to the top of Group F in the ISSA/Pepsi/JN Manning Cup first round.

Ascot's victory pushed them to seven points from three games, while Wolmer's and Donald Quarrie trail with four points.

In the group's other game, St. Catherine scored an easy 4-0 win over Innswood.

St. Catherine were bolstered by a brace from Duran Gilworth, who got goals in the 72nd and two minutes into injury time.

The day's third game, Tarrant versus Charlie Smith, was abandoned because of a water logged field.

In the game that decided the group leaders, Ascot pegged back a fifth minute strike from Ranique Rowe with goals from Dwayne Wright in the 38th and Alwyn Morgan in the 68th.

The first goal came when Mario Miller picked up a pass on the left flank and put in an early cross to Rowe, who beat his marker and made room for a well placed 20-yard drive that had the goalkeeper well beaten.

Ascot levelled the scores seven minutes from half-time when Wright slammed in a rebound. They clinched all three points from the penalty spot mid-way the half. After a period of sustained pressure Ascot were awarded a penalty when Morgan was brought down in the box. The player got up and made no mistake from the spot.

After the game Spanish Town assistant coach Cecil Thomas gave his charges an earful for losing a game they should have won.

"You came here too relaxed, thinking Ascot were a team you could beat. You didn't do what you were taught to. You did the opposite," he screamed at the downtrodden looking bunch.

Ascot's coach Vance Grant was pleased with the way his team came together.

"It was all about our tactical and technical preparation. They had us as the underdogs but we decided that we were going to be firm right throughout the game and we did that," said Grant.
