Murders may be reprisals

Community members gather around the van from Maddens funeral home to get a glimps of the body of Kenroy Calvin and his son Garrick. Both men were shot dead at their home on Rusden Road in Rockfort, east Kingston, yesterday. - norman grindley

THE POLICE ARE looking into theories that yesterday's killing of a father and son on Rushden Road in Rockfort, east Kingston, was a reprisal for another murder committed in the community on Saturday.

Police theorise the two were murdered as reprisal for killing of a man on the nearby Adastra Road.

Kenroy Calvin, 43, and Garrick Calvin, 20, were murdered by gunmen who burst into their home at 2:00 a.m.

Police report the gunmen kicked open the door and opened fire, killing them. The police confirmed that the gunmen also fired shots on a number of other houses in the community during the attack.

Residents allege that another man was also shot in the incident, however, the police said they received no reports of this.

Yesterday, when THE STAR visited the area, the streets were mostly deserted and the occupants of the yard where the father and son were gunned down had fled the community.

Residents say the latest incident is a continuation of gang violence. They alleged that from as early as 4:00 p.m. gunmen had been firing shots in the area and although police patrolled the area, they say they do not feel safe. "When it touch certain time, dem nah come and dat time the gunman dem come do dem thing," one resident told THE STAR.

SUSPICIONS

Deputy Superintendent Michael Ellis, crime chief for the Kingston Eastern Division, said the police have some suspicions as to who may have been responsible for the murder, however, they are still investigating.

There has been a resurgence of gang violence in the area over the past six months. Police say the war is mainly between gunmen from Glaspole Avenue and Rusden Road while some residents from other roads have been aligning themselves with the different sides.

In the meantime, the police continue to patrol the community in an attempt to keep a lid on the warfare.
