WITH PEACE AND unity on the minds of some Spanish Town residents, Hype Fridays has begun to garner some support from in and outside of the capital. Last Friday saw the Tawes Pen scheme hosting the street dance, with musical juggling from the selectors of Hype Tension and Eraser, and a half hour long performance from young dancehall act, Shane-O.
The night which was dedicated to the young deejays, also saw a performance from ten-year-old sensation, QQ and a drove of other upcoming acts.
At midnight, the musical selection from Hype Tension began drawing the crowd and by 2:30 a.m. the dance was in full swing. The sound responded to the influx of young girls that had congregated in front of the selection booth by playing a string of 'dancing songs', including Mr. Wacky Tribute, by Voicemail and a string of Elephant Man hits. Though most males were off to the sides, they could be seen doing more conservative dances, like Rock Away.
At around 3:10 a.m., QQ went on-stage to a receiving crowd, giving the female patrons a series of lovers' songs, including So Much Love To Give, and Use Of Her/Lose Her. The young deejay moved on to perform his popular tracks, Betta Mus Come and Poverty, much to the delight of his audience. After a few short performances from other young acts, and a few older local deejays, musical juggling returned, as the sound man announced that Shane-O was set to perform.
After a lengthy wait, the arrival of the 17-year-old dancehall act was announced at 4:55 a.m., and without hesitation he jumped on-stage.
The young deejay, recognising the strong female presence, went on a 'girls tune' spree, hitting the Hype Friday patrons with songs such as Ayayayayayah, and Two Much Dogs. He portrayed his lyrical versatility and also released a string of 'gun tunes,' and eventually appeasing his fans, with his breakout hit, Lightning Flash.
"Love di unity ting weh di dads dem a promote," stated Shane-O, whilst performing on-stage.
With a solid 35-minute performance, Shane-O left the stage as daybreak began. Sound juggling kept the dance in swing until after 6:00 a.m., with the sun well up over the horizon.
Top Man Promotions, the promoters of the weekly event say that Friday will be the best instalment yet. They say they are expecting performances from acts such as Fantan Mojah, Alozade, and Ghandi and there will be musical selection from First Choice.
