TAYLOR HALL'S OUTRAGE Short Shorts Party, staged at the Students' Union, UWI, on Friday lived up to its status of being a high-energy party to start out the new school semester.
The event known for its ability to attract a large number of females failed a bit in that aspect this year. The overall female attendance this year was poor but that did not determine the success of the event. With 'lecturers' from Renaissance and Bass Odyssey behind the turntables and the likes of Arif Cooper, the patrons were in for a treat.
The selectors rotated between two dance floors, one to the rear and the other to the right just after entering the venue. At minutes after midnight the front dance floor did not have much to offer and the Bass Odyssey selectors who were 'spinning' at the time pledged to have the relatively empty dance floor packed before they handed over the selecting duties.
On the rear dance floor the vibes was overwhelming. Arif Cooper had the patrons reacting to Leftside & Esco's Tuck In Yuh Belly and used the counteraction Leggo Yuh Belly to send waves of 'forwards' through the crowd.
Musical stick-up
The energy level was increased when the Renaissance Crew took over selecting duties. They had the patrons reaching for the sky as they unleashed some hip-hop material from 50 Cents and the Game. Later in their stint, Gyptian's Serious Times and a few selections from Sizzla and Jah Cure left the patrons in a reflective mood.
However, there was a surprise for at least one selector. The statement; "Free Up Jah Cure" is normally known to generate overwhelming reactions from dancehall crowds, however on Friday the patrons reacted as if they did not hear what the selector was saying. Silence hovered over the crowd after the selector made the comment. A female patron even went as far as saying: "Mi caan listen him song dem anymore, if him a rapist him must stay a prison." But as soon as Reflections echoed from the speakers the same crowd erupted.
When Bass Odyssey was summoned to the back venue to play, the sound from St. Ann did not disappoint, despite playing a similar set to Renaissance in their beginning stint.
Overall the vibes and party mood was high and the selectors did a good job.
