Response to 'The dark side of black people'

THE EDITOR, MADAM:

Leighton Levy's article 'The dark side of black people' has saddened the hearts of every sincerely proud black person I know in Jamaica or abroad. Throughout the black struggle, black men have continued to contribute to the derailment of the black cause. Today they continue to sell out for trinkets, steal, murder, create mayhem, and slander their own race just because they are not genuine, strong and brave enough to stay the course no matter how challenging it may seem.

I know our oppressors are patting each other's backs for a job well done. They have been very successful. They have always been able to depend on black people who psychosomatically assist in the degradation of their own race. It is obvious why so many young Jamaicans bleach their skins.

Unconsciously, we continue to mislead our future into being ashamed of being black. While watching 'Katrina's' aftermath on his television, the self-proclaimed proud black man, Mr. Levy, saw "the dark side of black people and their genetic predisposition to steal, murder and create mayhem". We, however, along with hundreds of millions of black, white, yellow or brown people across the globe, saw a tragedy and possibly the dark side of the richest government in the world and how they continue to treat non-white people. The fact that criminals choose to loot and murder was an unfortunate reality which has absolutely nothing to do with race. All races steal and murder. However, I think some races have more traitors than others.

Black struggle

As fellow proud black people, we are suggesting to Mr. Levy that he put away his pen and 'notebook' for a long time while he pick up some history and psychology books. After all, he is a possible voice for us. Therefore, we believe he should want to be less ignorant and more able to inform the less fortunate among us.

Leighton, there is a lot of information to be learnt about the black struggle in and around New Orleans and why this area is home to the poorest communities in the U.S.A., including 'Cancer Alley'. Please make sure to find out how our oppressors came together and continue in unison to steal, murder, slander and create mayhem around the world. Then ask yourself why you do not think they are genetically predisposed to such.

If you are truly a proud black man, I hope you will understand our desire for you to put down your pen and notebook until you have become knowledgeable enough to be a benefit to your race.
