GYPTIAN ONLY recently emerged on the music scene but already the words from his single 'Serious Times' has found itself in the hearts of many Jamaicans.
Born Windel Edwards on October 25, 1983 the singer hails from King Weston District in St. Ann. He tasted success earlier when he was chosen as the winner of the last Portmore talent contest, but that success is minimal to what he is currently experiencing.
The humble young man declares that his recent success has not changed him in any way, and his attitude and demeanour are still intact.
"Well, Gyptian is an entertainer who remains a humble youth who runs a joke like everyone every now and then. And despite the success I have remained level-headed," he said.
Gyptian attended King Weston All-Age before going on to Glengoffe High school with the goal of becoming either a police or a soldier high on his agenda. However, there was another calling that the young man answered and according to him it was a move that he has not regretted thus far.
Serious now
"I have been singing from a tender age but then I did not take it seriously. As a matter of fact, I did not take it serious until my family members introduced me to Mr. Wong, a producer from Portmore," he explained.
"My family members have always been carrying me to Portmore to see him but I usually disappear. One day they dropped me off at his studio and left me and it all began there," he explained.
Serious Time, a conscious song, has put him on track to follow the likes of I-Wayne, Jah Cure and Fantan Mojah.
"I have done some things that I have put my all into and I feel really proud about it. Music is the only thing that will transpire eternally and the idea of doing conscious music has become a part of me," he said. "You can look for a continued vibe from Gyptian as long as it is clean, good music that everyone can listen, meditate upon, and enjoy."
He said he is currently working on new material while dealing with the many producers that have shown interest in him, and also the many show offers he has received both locally and internationally.
