NEW CHAMPIONS WILL be crowned in the KSAFA Business House football competition as Carib Cement Company defeated The Gleaner 3-0 in yesterday's semi-final fixture at the UWI Bowl.
Carib Cement went ahead early. In the fifth minute Asa McIntosh profited from a mix up in The Gleaner backline to slot past Gleaner goalkeeper Andrew Sewell.
Trying to recover from the early goal The Gleaner looked to get their attack going but the Cement Company defence was equal to the task. They took a no-nonsense approach in their defensive stance and The Gleaner found it difficult to create any scoring opportunities.
On the other hand, Carib Cement looked increasingly dangerous when they advanced and on the stroke of half-time they increased the lead.
Once again The Gleaner defensive unit seemed to be caught flat, perhaps looking for an offside call, which allowed Dwayne Morgan to break free and round goalkeeper Sewell before easily side-footing the ball into the back of the net to put his team 2-0 up at the break and deflating the defending champions.
Two goals down in the second half, The Gleaner struggled to take a firm grasp in terms of possessing the ball. As a result they failed to create any meaningful opportunities and never looked like coming back into the game.
To add insult to injury, after a few missed opportunities by the Cement team, Desmond Taylor broke free in the 85th minute to fire past Sewell putting the matter beyond doubt.
Carib Cement will now face the University of the West Indies who got by Sherwin Williams 1-0 in the day's other semi-final at the Cable and Wireless Sports Club.
