Fisherman nets six months for ganja

By Rasbert Turner, Freelance Writer

SPANISH TOWN, ST. CATHERINE

A 20-YEAR-old fisherman from Old Harbour Bay, St. Catherine was on Friday fined $15,000 and sentenced to six months imprisonment after pleading guilty to possession 154.5 kilograms of ganja.

Kevin Brown also known as Garfield Bailey, received the sentence after he was caught with 154.5kgs (340lbs) of compressed ganja arising from a search of his house on May 15.

Constable Lloyd Knight of the Old Harbour police told the court that on the day in question, at 7:30 p.m., policemen from the Old Harbour police station went to Bailey's house with a warrant. They searched his house and the contraband was found. He was charged with possession of dealing in and taking steps to export ganja.

When he appeared in court, Brown pleaded guilty to possession of ganja. He told Resident Magistrate Carol Edwards that he was not dealing in the drugs. As a result, he was sentenced for possession and is scheduled to reappear in court on December 5 to answer to the charges of dealing in and taking steps to export the drug.
