THE PORTMORE CITIZENS Advisory Council has decided to call off its legal battle with the Government over the establishment of the Portmore Causeway as a toll road.
In a release on Tuesday, Reverend Barrington Soares, chairman of the Portmore Citizens Advisory Council, said his association was no longer interested in continuing with the legal action based on the legal advice received.
The PCAC had taken the Government to court earlier this month over their decision to turn the causeway into a toll road without the provision of a suitable alternate route. The court, however, ruled in favour of the Government.
"The P.C.A.C. has met and examined the advice of our attorneys in the matter and after careful deliberation, we have decided not to pursue further legal action," the release quoted Reverend Soares as saying.
He said the matter was taken to court after talks with the elected representatives for the community were unsuccessful. He said a mandate was given by citizens to pursue legal action for an alternate route.
He said now such an act was completed they would turn over the matter to their elected representatives.
He thanked the residents for their support and said continuing with the legal action would not serve a useful purpose.
"We believe we have made our point in bringing the wishes of the citizens of Portmore forcefully to those we have elected to govern, and that they have heard us and no further useful purpose would be served in continuing to pursue a solution through the courts," he said.
