EVERYBODY HOPES FOR the day when they can find the partner of his or her dreams and that's just what Martin Nairne found when he met Neressa who he dreamt about and prayed for the night before he met her.
Mr. Nairne said that after coming out of a bad relationship, he had been single for three years, hiring a helper to do household chores for him. However, soon this was not enough and he began to feel lonely. Mr. Nairne desperate for companionship, asked God tosend him a wife.
"I say: 'Lord what I must do. I am lonely I am defeated, I have no help and I heard other people say help come from you ... 'Lord you see I need somebody to take care of me, somebody of my own equal,'" he said recalling his prayer.
That night, he went to sleep and he said he had a vision where he saw the lady who would become his wife. The following day his dream came true and he saw his dream lover for the first time. "... I saw her and somebody said: 'See you wife there,'" he said.
He said he saw her a few more times before he finally approached her but when he did, she was not receptive. "The following day -the second day she saw him -I met him at the same spot and I was very facety and him look at me and I turn around and seh: 'Weh yuh a look paan mi so fah, mi nuh want nobady,'" Neressa said.
When she finally decided to listen to what he had to say, she told him she would discuss it with her mother and if her mother consented, she would date him. She said she went home and thought about it and then, "A month after, I wrote him a letter that if you going to have Mary, Jane and Sarah, den tell me now cause I am not in any joke," she said.
Mr. Nairne said he had serious intentions towards her and in that same year, 1951, they started living together. In 1956 they decided to get married, however, Mrs. Nairne fell ill and the plans had to be delayed. On December 30, 1957, the couple was wed in a small ceremony that was attended by two witnesses.
The couple say they have never argued and they discuss things when there is a difference of opinion. The couple have four children, 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
The Nairnes say that throughout their marriage they have worked closely together to achieve their goals. Mrs. Nairne who is 76 years old and her husband who is 90 years old say they have no regrets about the relationship. "I find no fault with her. We work together," Mr. Nairne said. "Instead of sorry, I am glad about everything because we get together and work together," Mrs. Nairne said.
